Derftdan Resources Limited conducted a baseline assessment of the Kontagora cashew farm, uncovering issues contributing to low productivity and poor nut quality. A key recommendation from the assessment was the replacement of underperforming trees with improved, high-yielding planting materials sourced from credible sources.
To address these issues, a phased renovation and rehabilitation of the farm is underway, beginning with thinning and replanting activities across 50 hectares (25%) of the total farm area. This process involves removing one tree every 10 meters to gradually convert the current ultra-high-density (UHD) 5m x 5m spacing to a more sustainable standard 10m x 10m spacing over a 1 to 3-year period.
Before field operations commenced, the technical team liaised with the farm’s management to ensure all required materials and services were in place. Field activities began with a one-day on-site briefing for farm staff, during which the project objectives, scope, and expected outcomes of the renovation and rehabilitation exercise were clearly explained. The session included roles and responsibilities assignment, and project opportunity to clarify questions, and allowed the farm staff to contribute suggestions that could enhance the overall success of the activity.
