Derftdan carried out the Impact Analysis of the Community-Based Seed Multiplication (CBSM) Enterprises, a critical evaluation initiative under the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP). The study assessed how CBSM enterprises enhanced the availability, accessibility, and adoption of quality seeds among smallholder farmers in Kano State. KSADP’s intervention aims to address a major challenge in the agricultural sector—farmers’ lack of access to certified seeds, often resulting in the use of grain for planting, which limits productivity. The CBSM model seeks to improve seed systems through localized, farmer-led production of high-quality seeds, promoting increased agricultural productivity and sustainable income generation at the community level.
The project evaluated the economic viability, social impact, and sustainability of CBSM enterprises. Specifically, the study assessed whether the CBSM approach has enhanced farmers’ income, created jobs, improved agricultural practices, and fostered public-private partnerships in the seed sector. The findings provided actionable recommendations for sustaining and scaling these enterprises to further enhance food security and rural development in Kano State.
Aim of the study
The overarching aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of CBSM enterprises on farmers, businesses, and the seed system in Kano State. Specifically, the study:
- Assessed the availability and accessibility of quality seeds and the enterprises created from community-based seed multiplication by KSADP
- Evaluated the contribution of these enterprises to income generation, and employment creation within their respective value chains and communities
- Unearthed information on the nature of the support that was provided through SAA/KASDP and how it addressed farming activity challenges
- Assessed training received on agricultural practices and business management through KSADP intervention and its effectiveness and relevance in increasing yield and promoting behavioural change
- Evaluated the roles and contributions of seed companies and research institutes in the Kano State’s seed system
- Analyzed the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in the seed sector under KSADP
- Identified pathways for sustaining project gains beyond the project’s lifespan and suggested risk-management strategies
